The Berlin-Grünau Regatta Course and its tradition

1880

Founding of the Regatta Course

The Berlin-Grünau regatta course was founded in 1880, making it one of the oldest rowing regatta courses in Germany. The calm waters of the Dahme river between Grünau and Schmöckwitz provided ideal conditions for the sport of rowing.

1936

Olympic Games Berlin

The international highlight of the course: at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, the rowing and canoeing competitions took place at the Grünau regatta course. The course was modernized for this event and gained worldwide fame.

GDR Tradition: Boat and Camping Fairs

During the GDR era, Grünau became an important centre of water sports. The popular boat and camping fairs at the regatta course were very well attended by Berliners and visitors from across the GDR.

This tradition of combining sport, product presentation and festival character lives on in today's Berlin Water Sports Festival.
